Hamburger Abendblatt, 1983:
Photographer Ilka H. was assigned to cover the festival of foreign streetcars
in San Francisco. To her great surprise, she discovered that the #2 streetcar
which she took to school everyday growing up in Hamburg was among them. The writer
of the article in the Hamburger Abendblatt quotes her in paragraph 6.
"The eyes of the passengers
are sparkling, the mood is joyous", reports photographer Ilka Hartmann. She
comes from Hamburg and emigrated 19 years ago to the United States, and now lives
in San Francisco. "The electric sign on the streetcar still said '2'. As
a child I took the '2' daily from Siemersplatz to Helene-Lange Schule. The streetcar
still bounces along just like it used to, the bells sound exactly the same, the
wooden seats - in contrast to the upholstered ones of the San Francisco streetcars
- are as hard as ever".
